South Africa will face Argentina in London in the 2025 Rugby Championship (PHILL MAGAKOE)

World champions South Africa's Rugby Championship trip to Argentina has been switched to London's Twickenham stadium, governing body SANZAAR announced on Tuesday.

The match will take place on October 4 on the final weekend of the annual championship between the four southern hemisphere powers of Argentina, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

It is only the second time a Rugby Championship match will be played outside of those territories after Argentina's meeting with Australia, which also took place in London in 2016.

South Africa are the holders of the competition, while Argentina narrowly missed out on piping New Zealand to second place last year after winning three of their six games.

For South Africa, the showdown marks a return to a familiar venue, having played three Test matches over the last 18 months at Twickenham.

Rassie Erasmus’ Springboks beat England (29-20) and Wales (41-13) in London last year, having beaten New Zealand 35-7 in front of a sold-out crowd in 2023 as they warmed up to successfully defend their World Cup crown.

"We’ve played two neutral-venue Test matches at the iconic stadium since 2023 against New Zealand and Wales, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially with the passionate crowd filling the stadium and the large contingent of Springbok supporters based in the UK," said Erasmus.
